The Anansi Boys
I have to admit that Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite writers. I love how the fantasy parts of his writing seems so natural, like of course it would be like that. And reading The Anansi Boys is just like that, what with ghosts and split personalities that become real people and shadow monsters. It all just seems so natural.
Fat Charlie, the main character in the book, is born into a strange and embarrassing family. His dad is Anansi, a sort of God and teller of stories. It is through the telling of stories that the world came into being. Of course, as with all Neil Gaiman books, there is a world under or within the world. Nothing is ever as simple and straight forward as you would think.
Fat Charlie finds himself caught up in a world between worlds, in a mystery, and in a magical playground that is sometimes leaves him baffled. But as the book moves forward Fat Charlie adapts and becomes more confident in everything he is doing. His brother, Spider, makes things interesting and causes Fat Charlie a lot of problems - with his fiance, with the law, at work. You name it and Spider will find a way to force Fat Charlie to change.
But Spider also forces Fat Charlie to look at his life a little differently, with a new perspective. And in the end, Fat Charlie learns he is more than he gave himself credit for. Even though this is supposed to be an "adult" book it's a lot of fun to read. The characters are great who doesn't want to read a book that takes place in London, Florida and the Carribean islands!
